Secret Santa rules – 8 simple rules that make it more fun
7 October 2026 · 2 min read
A Secret Santa does not need many rules, but a few make it much easier for everyone. Here are eight that work for families, friends and workplaces. Use them as they are, or adjust them for your group.
1. One fixed budget
Agree on one amount, for example €20, and stick to it. A little over or under is fine, but a €60 gift makes things awkward for the person who spent €15.
2. Nobody draws themselves
It sounds obvious, but it happens all the time with names in a hat. Draw again if it does, or use an online draw that never gives anyone their own name.
3. Keep the secret
Whoever drew you should not tell you until the gifts are opened. That is the whole point. Ideally, the organiser should not know who drew whom either.
4. Couples and close family do not draw each other
Partners, and parents with their children, usually buy each other gifts anyway. Agree in advance who should not draw whom.
5. Write a short wishlist
Three hints are enough: a colour, a hobby and something you do not like. It makes it far easier to get it right, especially when people do not know each other well.
6. Allow one swap
Sometimes you draw someone you know very little about. It is fine to let people ask for a swap, as long as it happens quietly and only once, or it gets chaotic.
7. Decide what happens if someone cannot come
Agree that the gift is dropped off beforehand, posted, or given the next time you meet. That way nobody is left without a present.
8. Take your time with the exchange
Open the gifts one at a time and let people guess who their Secret Santa was. It is the best moment of the whole thing.
In short
One budget, a secret draw, short wishlists and a clear date for the exchange. With JingleBell, rules 2, 3 and 4 are handled automatically, and participants can ask for one swap themselves.
