How to organise a Secret Santa that everyone enjoys

6 October 2026 · 2 min read

A Secret Santa is one of the easiest ways to make the holidays feel generous without anyone spending a fortune. Everyone buys one gift for one person, and nobody knows who is buying for whom until the gifts are opened. Here is how to run one that goes smoothly.

1. Decide who is in

Start with a simple question in your group chat: "Who wants to join a Secret Santa this year?" Give people a few days to answer. Three people is the minimum for a real surprise; most groups work best with somewhere between five and twenty.

If some people only know each other a little, that is fine. A short wishlist solves most of the guesswork.

2. Agree on a budget

Pick one amount and make it clear: "Gifts around 200 kr" or "up to €20". A fixed budget keeps things fair, and it stops anyone from feeling awkward about giving something smaller than they received.

3. Set the date

Choose when the gifts will be exchanged, whether that is the office Christmas party, a family dinner or a video call. Give people at least two weeks after the names are drawn so they have time to shop.

4. Keep couples and families apart

If two people live together, it is usually more fun if they don't draw each other. The same goes for parents and children in a family exchange. Agree on these pairs before the draw, not after.

5. Draw the names

You can write names on paper and pull them from a hat, but someone always draws themselves and the organiser often ends up knowing too much. An online draw keeps it fair and secret: everyone gets a private message with their match, and the organiser can't see who got whom.

6. Share wishlists

Ask everyone to write two or three ideas. They don't need to be specific products. "Something for the kitchen", "a good crime novel" or "warm socks, size 38" all help.

7. Plan the reveal

Decide how the gifts will be opened. Some groups guess who their Secret Santa was, others reveal it straight away. Either way, take a moment to enjoy it: that's the best part.

Quick checklist

  • Everyone has said yes
  • Budget and date are agreed
  • Couples and close family are kept apart
  • Names are drawn privately
  • Wishlists are shared

With those in place, all that's left is the fun part.
